Best Home Saunas 2026: Buying Guide
Traditional vs infrared, indoor vs outdoor, 120V vs 240V, real starting prices and nine featured models from five brands.
Quick answer
- Want the lowest cost and easiest install? A 1–2 person indoor infrared sauna that plugs into a regular 120V outlet. Brand prices start around $2,000–$3,000.
- Want the classic hot, steamy Finnish sauna? A traditional sauna with a stove-style electric heater. Expect a dedicated 240V circuit installed by an electrician.
- Have a backyard? An outdoor barrel sauna is the most popular outdoor shape and among the lower-priced outdoor options.
- Want something bigger or custom? Outdoor cabin saunas and custom-built infrared rooms cost more but fit more people.
Home sauna types explained
Traditional vs infrared
| Traditional (Finnish) | Infrared | |
|---|---|---|
| How it heats | Electric (or wood) heater warms rocks and the air; you can pour water on the rocks for steam | Infrared emitters (panels) warm your body more directly; the air stays cooler |
| Typical temperature | Up to about 190–194°F per the brands below | Lower air temperature (check each model’s spec) |
| Steam | Yes (wet/dry) | No |
| Power (US) | Usually 240V, 30–40A dedicated circuit, hard-wired | Many small indoor models use a standard 120V/15A outlet |
| Best for | People who want the classic sauna feel | Easy indoor installs, lower running heat |
Indoor vs outdoor
- Indoor saunas go in a basement, garage, spare room or large bathroom. Smaller infrared units can be assembled in about an hour, according to SunRay.
- Outdoor saunas need a flat, solid base (pad or deck), weather protection (some brands sell roof kits), and an electrical run from your house. Outdoor models are built with exterior-grade wood and roofs.
Barrel vs cabin (outdoor)
- Barrel saunas are round and compact. The curved shape means less air to heat. They are usually the cheaper outdoor option.
- Cabin / cube saunas are square or rectangular, often with porches, bigger windows and more seats, and they usually cost more.
Electrical needs (US): 120V vs 240V
This is the most-missed cost when people shop for a sauna.
- Traditional heaters (most 4.5–9kW models) need 240V. Almost Heaven’s FAQ says its standard heater options need 30–40 amps on a 240V hard-wired connection, and some premium heaters need up to 60 amps. Its KIP heater manual specifies a 30-amp double-pole breaker for 4.5 and 6kW heaters and a 40-amp breaker for 8kW, and says not to use a GFCI with the heater. The light needs a separate 110V/15A supply.
- Golden Designs lists 240V/30A (Andermatt indoor traditional) and 240V/40A (Arlberg outdoor traditional) for the stove, plus 120V/15A for lights and music.
- Small infrared saunas often run on 120V. SunRay says its indoor infrared models run on a standard 110V outlet. Golden Designs lists 120V/15A for its Dynamic 1-person compact infrared sauna.
- Always use a licensed electrician for any 240V hard-wired heater. Every brand manual we checked says this.

How to choose: 6 questions
- Indoor or outdoor? Measure the space, and for outdoors plan the base and the power run.
- Steam or no steam? Want to pour water on rocks? Go traditional. Want easy plug-in? Look at small infrared.
- How many people? Seat count drives size, heater kW and price.
- What power do you have? 240V needs an electrician and panel capacity. 120V infrared is simpler.
- Delivery and assembly: check whether freight is curbside and how many people assembly needs.
- Warranty and returns: read the brand’s warranty page (structure vs heater coverage) and return/restocking terms before buying.
FAQ
Can I plug a sauna into a regular outlet? Some small infrared models, yes (SunRay and Golden Designs list 110–120V models). Traditional saunas with 4.5kW+ heaters usually need a 240V hard-wired circuit.
Barrel or cabin? Barrels are compact and usually cheaper; cabins give more room and windows.
